On the castle island between Lake Schwerin and Lake Burgsee stands the former main residence of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Work on the five-winged palace began in 1560; it received its present romantic-historicist look by 1857, modelled on the French Château de Chambord.
Since 1990 the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania meets here. The castle museum shows the throne room, the ancestral gallery and the palace chapel. Since July 2024 the castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.
Tip: Plan a walk through the Burggarten and the baroque palace garden.
